We just underwent a winter storm here in TX that, at least for Houston, was unprecedented. We got temperatures that went down to single digits. For a state mostly known for heat and humidity, this was abnormal. Businesses, schools, and people were forced to shut down and people stayed home. Many homes went without electricity for long hours and internet and phone service was also very spotty. During these times, people were forced to live without technology, so to speak. I cannot say this with certainty, but those people who had access to a fireplace and either wood or gas to use it, certainly took the opportunity to do so.
Thinking about these scenarios people had to face, it made me think about man on a grand scale. For centuries, before man was blessed with TV, radio, and all the advanced technology we have now, people sat by the fire and read or recited stories to keep themselves entertained, share wisdom, and teach their families life lessons. Now I am certainly not suggesting we go back to the stone ages and dump technology, if that is even entirely possible, but what I am suggesting is the value that reading stories to our families had then and still has now.
As a co-author of a kid’s book, I know the value of sitting and reading to my kids and others (nephew, cousins, etc.). Reading to children inspires their imaginations and makes them concentrate on what the speaker is saying. These skills in turn, develop listening and interpreting skills which are invaluable. Reading also gives you valuable time with your kids. Please encourage and share reading books with your children. Reading is a time-tested entertainment tool, and has multiple benefits for you and your kids.
